Rescue Dog Recess
Because everyone deserves a break.
Life in a shelter can be overwhelming—even for the most resilient pups. Rescue Dog Recess is a short-term foster program designed to give our dogs a much-needed break from the shelter and a chance to experience the world beyond kennel walls.

Whether it's for a couple of hours or a whole day, your time can make a big difference.
How long can I take a dog out?
That’s up to you! Whether it’s a quick car ride or a full-day adventure, you set the pace. Some favorite ideas include:
- Grabbing a pup cup on a coffee run
- Lounging at home for a nap and some quiet time
- Visiting a local park or going on a scenic hike
- Hanging out on a restaurant patio or brewery
- Having a solo backyard play session (no other dogs, please)
- Sharing a quiet picnic in the sunshine
Getting our dogs out in the community not only gives them a break—it helps them get adopted faster. Plus, you help us learn more about their personalities, which means better matches and happier endings.
Won’t the dog be sad coming back?
It’s a common concern—and we understand. But the good news is, science backs the benefit.
A study by KC Pet Project found that even though shelter stress may return after a recess, it doesn’t increase. In fact, these outings provide a critical reset, allowing dogs to rest, decompress, and return better able to cope with their environment.
Can I pick which dog I take?
We’ll provide a list of dogs eligible for recess, but you’re welcome to come meet them and choose the pup that speaks to your heart.
Share the joy
We ask all Rescue Dog Recess fosters to take lots of pictures during their outing. These candid moments help us promote the dog on social media and give potential adopters a glimpse of who they really are outside the shelter.

It’s not just for the dogs…
Taking a dog out for a few hours isn’t just a gift for them—it’s also a way to lift your own spirits, enjoy some fresh air, and share a little love. Whether you’re walking trails or curling up at home, you’re making a real impact.

Because sometimes, just a few hours can change everything.
Foster Application
Volunteering for Rescue Dog Recess has become one of the most meaningful parts of my week. There's something incredibly special about giving a shelter dog a chance to feel free even for just a little while- walking, exploring, and just being a dog outside the kennel walls. One of the things I love most is witnessing the transformation that happens in just a couple hours. The dog that you meet at the start of the day is full of excitement - tail wagging, eyes bright, ready for an adventure. By the end of the day, that same dog is calm, content, and grateful- licking your face, resting their head on your arm, or curled up in the backseat taking a peaceful nap.
But it's not just for the dogs - it fills my heart too. Rescue Dog Recess isn't just about walks; it's about love, connection, and kindness - even in the smallest doses - that make a world of difference. That's why I keep coming back."
